IDES hosts terrific UI Integrity Conference

On Point Technology would like to thank everyone from the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES), the National Association of State Workforce Agencies and the U.S. Department of Labor who contributed to a terrific UI Integrity Conference April 4–5 in Chicago. Special thanks to IDES Director Brenda Russell, Benefit Payment Control Manager Charlene McLaughlin and the IDES conference staff who did a wonderful job of organizing and managing the event.

We couldn't be more pleased with the number of attendees who stopped by to see Barts, Aware and Recover in action. We received much positive feedback and had several visitors return to the exhibit two or three times. We were most appreciative of the kind comments presenters from the Washington State Department of Employment Security made about Barts and Aware in their session—we are certain they motivated some attendees to stop by for a demo.

In addition to a top-notch program with first-rate presenters, the food was terrific and the night at the Shedd Aquarium was a real treat. This conference was an unforgettable event where information and experiences were shared, old acquaintances renewed and new contacts established. Illinois certainly raised the bar and we look forward to attending the 2008 conference—wherever it may be!

On Point Technology to attend Nat'l UI Issues Conference

On Point Technology continues its coast-to-coast road show May 1–3 in Portland, Oregon, site of the 25th Annual National Unemployment Insurance Issues Conference, presented by Strategic Services on Unemployment and Workers' Compensation (UWC).

On Point Technology representatives will demonstrate the company's package software solutions, including Barts, Aware and Recover—our recently released overpayment collections management application. These demonstrations will complement the conference's timely and relevant agenda, which explores topics such as SUTA dumping, identity theft, UI trust fund preservation, tax rate stabilization, and UI technology initiatives and advances.

This will be the last conference for UWC President Eric Oxfeld, who is leaving the organization after working many successful years with both public and private sector entities invested in unemployment insurance. We look forward to joining conference attendees in bidding Eric goodbye and good luck in his future ventures.

We know that many BullsEye readers will be in attendance and we invite you to stop by our booth to see our software presentations and pick up informational and promotional materials prepared especially for this conference. See you in the Rose City!

Industry News

Washington State shares NDNH crossmatch experience — Washington is one of six states that participated with the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to design and plan the implementation of a crossmatch that compares UI claims files with data from the National Directory of New Hires (NDNH), a national database of wage and employment information.

At the National UI Integrity Conference in Chicago May 1–3, representatives from the Washington Employment Security Department (WESD) shared their experience using the NDNH in conjunction with On Point Technology's Barts application to help identify UI fraud and overpayments. The results so far have been nothing short of dramatic. For the period starting October 1, 2005, and ending March 1, 2006, WESD sent 80,000 requests for data, leading to 14,807 matches. Out-of-state overpayments identified amounted to $18.4 million, of which WESD was in direct contact with $5 million and collected $800,000.

Did You Know?

Aware "one-click" audit helps with PEO regulations — On March 13, 2006, Alabama joined the more than 30 states that require the registration and regulation of professional employer organizations (PEOs). With Governor Bob Riley's signature, the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) assumed the authority to regulate companies that serve as the employer of record for their clients' workers. The Department's Workers' Compensation Division will administer the legislation.

Sometimes called "employee leasing companies" or "staff leasing companies," PEOs provide a variety of services, including payroll, taxes, unemployment insurance, Workers' Compensation insurance, health insurance and other benefits, like 401(k)s and Christmas Club plans. Among other provisions, the new law requires all PEOs that operate in Alabama to register with the state and provide a list of the client businesses they serve. It also authorizes the state to investigate and audit these firms.

Did you know that On Point Technology has developed a "one-click" audit to analyze personnel movements into, out of and among PEOs? Aware's PEO audit can help your agency identify instances of employers underpaying or not filing UI taxes, and spot other abusive tactics that merit further investigation. For more information on how Aware can support your agency's PEO-regulation activities, contact Bob Yokavonus at 908-526-0426 or robert.yokavonus@onpointtech.com.

Congratulations to DIR Director Phyllis Kennedy and her staff who pushed hard for this legislation for several years, and best wishes to Workers' Compensation Division Director Scottie Spates and his staff as they take on this responsibility.
