Louisiana Governor issues order to suspend certain UI laws for workers displaced by Hurricane Katrina
October 4, 2005
At On Point Technology, our hearts and thoughts go out to everyone who has been touched by the recent devastating Gulf Coast hurricanes, particularly our colleagues in the state workforce agencies directly affected and the people who have volunteered to help relieve those agencies.
In response to Hurricane Katrina and the substantial increase in the number of unemployment claims filed, Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco issued an executive order that suspends many provisions of the state's unemployment insurance laws for workers displaced by the hurricane. Under the order, benefits will not be charged to the employer's unemployment tax account. The order also waives claimant work search requirements, and suspends many disqualifications that could delay the payment of benefits or employer access to personnel files. Governor Blanco originally issued the executive order on September 12, 2005, and it has since been extended until Sunday, October 23, 2005.
